Description: Image (.a): Studio portrait of a man wearing a coat, vest, shirt, necktie, and trousers. He has a beard. His left elbow is resting on a table covered with a tablecloth. A small book is nearby. Case (.b): Front and back covers are stamped with an image of Israel Putnam on horseback, riding down a steep slope on what appear to be stone steps. A tree is at the left. A building with a tower, probably a church with a steeple, is on the hill in the background. A rocky cliff is at the right. The design is surrounded by a cartouche with a border of stylized leaves and flowers. Pad: Red velvet stamped with a flower with five petals, surrounded by scrolls of stylized leaves.
Source Note: The source for the design is a lithograph by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg (1995.182.68). (Finlay 2/24/2003)
