George MathiotAmerican, died 1873

In 1851, George Mathiot developed an electrotyping process that allowed for unlimited reproduction of large engraved copper plates. He also developed a method for photographically enlarging and reducing the images on these plates. These two developments allowed the United States Coast Survey to produce maps at a much faster rate.
