James Botsford Beers was born in Newtown, Connecticut on October 16, 1811. Shortly after his marriage in 1835, he moved to Maryland, then to Brooklyn, New York. His son Frederick W. Beers was a partner in J. B. Beers & Co., established in 1870, and other sons and a grandson were subsequently involved in the business, which specialized in publishing maps and atlases.
