Edwin F. JohnsonAmerican, 1803 - 1872

Edwin F. Johnson was born in Vermont on 21 May 1803. He served for a time as surveyor general of Vermont, before moving to Middletown, Connecticut, where he established the first department of civil engineering in the country at the Military College that was the precursor to Wesleyan University. He was subsequently involved with many railroad projects and was a staunch promoter of a transcontinental railway. He died in New York on 12 April 1872. He is buried in Middletown, Connecticut.
