John Gould Darby was born in Vermont in 1808. He appears to have spent much of his life in western New York State. In 1838, he was working as an engraver in Buffalo. In 1853, he was living in Detroit, Michigan. In 1880, according to the Federal Census, he was living in New York City with his wife Mary. His occupation is given as "artist." He died in 1881.
