Mathew CareyAmerican, 1760 - 1839

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Mathew Carey immigrated to Philadelphia in 1784 and established a print shop and a publishing business. His most important contribution to cartography is his 1795 American Atlas, the first atlas to be published in America. Following Carey's retirement in 1822, his son Henry Charles Carey continued the business in partnership with Isaac Lea as Carey & Lea.
