Thomas Day was born 6 July 1777 in New Preston, Connecticut. He was the son of Reverend Jeremiah Day and his third wife, Abigail Noble Osborn Day. Thomas Day graduated from Yale College in 1797. He was admitted to the Bar in 1799, and he immediately began practicing law in Hartford, Connecticut. Thomas Day married Sarah Coit (d. 1865) on 18 March 1813; they had eight children.

Thomas Day was Connecticut Secretary of State from 1810-1835. He was a Reporter for the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1814 until his retirement in 1853. He was an Associate Judge in the Hartford County Court from 1815-1825, then served as Chief Judge of that court from 1825-1833. Day was an original member of the Connecticut Historical Society, and he served as their President from 1838-1855. He died in Hartford, Connecticut, on 1 March 1855.
