Reverend Joel HawesAmerican, 1789 - 1867

Reverend Joel Hawes was born 22 December 1789 in Medway, Massachusetts. He was the son of Phila Thayer Hawes and Joel Hawes. Joel Hawes married Louisa Fisher (d. 1867) on 17 June 1818; they had six children. He graduated from Brown University in 1813, and from Andover Theological Seminary in September 1817. Reverend Hawes preached at the First Church in Hartford on the first Saturday following his graduation; on 13 January 1818, he was invited to stay as the Pastor. Reverend Hawes remained the Pastor until his death. He became ill while preaching in Gilead, Connecticut, on 2 June 1867, and he died three days later.
