Hans Jorgen WegnerDanish, 1914 - 2007

Hans Jorgen Wegner was born in 1914. He trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts; he later lectured there from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers´ Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his career, he designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. His Danish Modern furniture, most famously his chairs, helped change the course of design history in the 1950s and 1960s, by sanding modernism’s sharp edges and giving aesthetes a comfortable seat. Hans J. Wegner died 26 January 2007 in Copenhagen, Denmark at the age of 92.
