LeGrand Lockwood

LeGrand Lockwood, self-made millionaire, was born August 14, 1820, in Norwalk Connecticut to Benjamin Lockwood and Elizabeth Kellogg. He began his career at the age of eighteen in New York City as a clerk in a brokerage firm. During his career he formed his own bank, Lockwood & Company, was elected the treasurer of the New York Stock Exchange and was a stockholder in the Lake Shore and Michigan railroad. In 1863 he built a mansion in Norwalk known as "Elm Park" utilizing the services of such designers as Leon Marcotte, Herter Brothers, George Platt and E.W. Hutchings. In 1869 Lockwood & Company went bankrupt, leading to the loss of his fortunes. He married Anna Louise Benedict (b. August 17, 1823 - d. 1883, daughter of Seth Willistoad Benedict and Fanny Roe Benedict) with whom he had eight children: LeGrand, Williston, Roswell, Henry, Arthur, Ana, Florence, and Edwin. He died of pneumonia in 1872.
