Ebenezer Chittenden was born in Madison, Connecticut, in 1726. Chittenden was a silvermith; he practiced his trade in Madison until 1770, when he moved to New Haven. Chittenden's shop in New Haven was located at the southeast corner of Gregson Alley and Chapel Street, west of the shop of his brother-in-law, Abel Buel. Ebenezer Chittenden was also a Warden of Trinity Church. His brother, Thomas Chittenden, was the first governor of Vermont.
