Lieutenant Uriel HolmesAmerican, 1741 - 1809

Uriel Holmes was born 11 June 1741 in East Haddam, Connecticut. He was the son of Sarah Andrews Holmes and Christopher Holmes. On 1 July 1764, he married Statira Cone (1749-1812), the daughter of Elizabeth Gates Cone and Johah Cone. Uriel and Statira Holmes settled in Hartland, Connecticut. Uriel Holmes was a prominent citizen, serving as Justice of the Peace, Representative in the Legislature, and Colonel of Militia. Uriel Jones joined the church in Hartland on 12 May 1769; Statira Holmes joined 11 September 1774. They gave a bell and a communion service (CHS 1974.56.1-.5) to the church, and Uriel was chosen as Deacon on 22 March 1779. Uriel Holmes died in 1809; his gravestone lists his death date as 7 November, but church records list it as 6 November.
