Edward Danforth

Edward Danforth was the third son of Martha Jacobs Danforth and Thomas Danforth II (1731-1782). He was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on 20 March 1765. His apprenticeship as a pewterer began in his father's shop, but was completed in the shop of his brother, Joseph Danforth (1758-1788) and/or Thomas Danforth III (1756-1840). In 1786, Edward left Middletown and opened a shop in Hartford; all of his pewter was produced in Hartford. Edward Danforth's name appears in the 1790 Census for Hartford. He acquired pewter molds and brazier's tools from the distribution his father's estate. Edward Danforth produced pewter between 1786 and 1799; during that time, he produced pewter and brass products. After 1799, his nephew, Thomas Danforth Boardman (1784-1873), used Edward Danforth's tools to enter into business for himself. Edward Danforth would have ceased pewter production at that time, but possibly continued to sell products made by Samuel Danforth and Thomas Boardman as part of a mercantile business. Edward Danforth married Jerusha Mossly of Glastonbury, Connecticut, in 1791. He died insolvent in 1830.
