Julian Alden Weir was born in West Point, New York on 30 August 1852. He studied art with his father Robert, at the National Academy of Design in New York City, and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, eventually becoming one of the most prominent American Impressionist painters. In 1883, he purchased a farm in Branchville, Connecticut, which was his primary residence for the rest of his life. Many of his prints and paintings depict the farm and surrounding area. Weir was also associated with the summer art colony in Cos Cob. He died in New York City in 1919 and is buried in Center Cemetery in Windham, Connecticut, his wife's hometown.
