Shenango China CompanyAmerican, founded 1901

Founded in 1901, the Shenango China Company struggled to stay in business until 1909, when new owners took over the business. Under the new president and treasurer, James MacMath Smith, the company prospered. The company produced durable hotel wares and vitrified china until 1936, when the Theodore Haviland Company of Limoges, France, came to America looking for an American company to produce Haviland China. From 1936-1938, the Shenango China Company made china for the Theodore Haviland Company, using their formulas, molds, designs, etc. Beginning in the late 1930s, Shenango took over the production of Castleton China, Inc., which they made until the 1970s. (Castleton China is noted for modern designs in fine china and hand-crafted pottery.) Castleton China manufactured presidential china services for the Eisenhower administration and the Johnson administration. On 2 June 1979, Shenango China Company became the property of the Anchor Hocking Corporation. They are still in business, manufacturing hotel, resturant, and institutional wares.
