Joseph Weekes

Joseph Weekes was born in Cornwall, England (probably Falmouth) June 8, 1829 (son of Joseph Weekes and Jane Hodge) and came to the U.S. in 1841. He lived in Manhattan, working as a barber and boarding in the 3rd ward with the family of Jobe Edwards, a police officer. He later married Edwards' daughter Cornelia and moved to Norwich (CT). In Norwich, he was active first as a daguerreotypist (beginning in 1850, according to the imprint on the back of some of his photographs) and later as a photographer. Upon leaving Norwich (about 1871 or later), he and his family moved to Illinois. He became a physician, apparently through a combination of school training and the 19th-century apprencticeship model. In 1879 he and the family moved from Illinois to Kansas where he spent the rest of his life. He is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Wabaunsee County, Kansas, with his wife and family. Two sons and at least one daughter survived him.
