John Avery was born in Preston, Connecticut, on 6 December 1732. He was the son of Captain John and Anne Stanton Avery. On 22 January 1752, he married his cousin, Mary Parke. They had four sons and four daughters. Mary Avery died on 14 January 1770; on 14 April 1770, John Avery married his second wife, Experience Stanton. They had five sons and one daughter.

John Avery was a clockmaker, silversmith, farmer, and public servant. He was a representative to the State Legislature in 1771, a Justice of the Peace in Preston for many years, and a selectman in Preston in 1774 and 1775. At the start of the American Revolution, he procured a paid substitute, but in 1776, he became part of a committee to procure arms for the war effort. John Avery died in Preston, Connecticut, on 23 July 1794.
