Martin LewisAmerican, 1881 - 1962

Martin Lewis was born in Australia on 7 June 1881. He worked as a laborer and seaman before settling down to study art a the Art Society's school in Sydney. He emigrated to the United States in 1900. Most of his subsequent career was spent in New York City, documenting city life in oil paintings, watercolors, and intaglio prints. LIke many other artists, he moved to Connecticut during the Great Depression, in order to cut costs. Unlike some other artists, he returned to the city as soon as possible. Although he found the Connecticut countryside unsympathetic, he produced some memorable and haunting images during his years in the village of Sandy Hook in the town of Newtown in Fairfield County. The Connecticut Historical Society has several of his prints and drawings of Connecticut subjects.
