Philip Kappel

Philip Kappel was born in Hartford, Connecticut and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Maritime subjects figure prominently in his work and he produced graphics for the major American steamship lines. He worked in a variety of media, but is chiefly known for his etchings. He was also an expert on Chinese porcelain, Japanese art, and American antiques. In the 1930s, Kappel purchased a home in New Milford, Connecticut; he also maintained a studio in Roxbury, Connecticut. A number of his prints are of scenes in Litchfield County.
