John Steuart CurryAmerican, 1897 - 1946

John Steuart Curry was born on a farm in Kansas on 14 November 1897. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by a year in Paris. Following his return to the United States, he married and moved to Westport, Connecticut, where he worked as an illustrator and began gaining recognition for his oil paintings, chiefly of midwestern subjects. During the Depression, he produced several large murals for public buildings under the sponsorship of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Curry died in Madison, Wisconsin on 29 August 1946.
