Frederick Childe Hassam was born on 17 October 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He began his career as a wood-engraver, draughtsman, and illustrator, specializing in children's books. He began exhibiting his oil paintings and watercolors in the early 1880s and, dropping his first name, began calling himself simply Childe Hassam. He became one of the most important and prominent American Impressionist painters. He was associated with the summer artists' colonies in both Cos Cob and Old Lyme, Connecticut. He died at his home in East Hampton, Long Island, New York on 27 August 1935.
