John Farley, who graduated from West Point in 1823 served as assistant in the Coast Survey. After a full twelve year military career, he resigned in 1835. He accepted the position of assistant in the Coast Survey in 1837.
Farley was the oldest assistant in the Coast Survey at the time of his death, which occurred on the morning of 31 July 1874 just after he arrived for duty.
