Westgarth Forster was born in 1772 in the British Lake District. Like his father, also named Westgarth Forster, he was a mining engineer. In 1809, he published A Treatise on a Section of the Strata from Newcastle to Cross Fell, a classic of British geology. He worked in mining districts in England and Wales and traveled to Spain and North America, where he visited mines in Pottsville and Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, and the Phoenix Copper Mine in East Granby, Connecticut.
