William VerstilleAmerican, 1757 - 1803

William Verstille, was born in 1755 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of a Boston merchant who came to Wethersfield in 1761. Verstille, while serving in the army in the American Revolution, painted miniatures of several officers. Verstille married Eliza Sheldon in 1780, and had six children; five of their children were born in East Windsor. Verstille was an active painter in Philadelphia (1782-1783), New York City (1784 and 1787-90). During the 1790's Verstille worked in Connecticut and Southern Massachusetts, in 1801 he was in Boston and in 1802, in Salem, Massachusetts. Verstille died in Boston in 1803.
