Frederick R. Spencer

BiographyFrederick R. Spencer grew up in Madison County, New York, the son of General Ichabod Spencer of Massachusetts. In 1825 Spencer went to New York to study under John Trumbull at the American Academy of Fine Arts. Spencer returned to upper New York State in 1827 and then later relocated to New York City with his wife, Harriet Jacobs in 1831. He was elected an academician at the American Academy in 1832, and served on its board of directors between 1833 and 1839. In 1858 he returned to upstate New York and died in Wampsville, New York in 1875.
