BiographyAlthough the encouragement of agriculture had been a concern of the United States government almost since its founding, the Department of Agriculture was only established in 1862, by President Abraham Lincoln, and even then it was headed by a Commissioner who was not part of the Presidential Cabinet. The Department was elevated to Cabinet status in 1889.
