George Benjamin Chittenden

American, 1849 - 1939
BiographyGeorge Benjamin Chittenden was born in Madison, Connecticut on 25 December 1849. He attended Yale College, where he studied engineering. In 1872, he was hired as a topographer for the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories under Ferdinand V. Hayden. Chittenden was involved in surveys of Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho. A mountain in Yellowstone National Park is named for him. In later life, Chittenden and his brother, Samuel, were partners in Chittenden Brothers, an engineering firm in Washington, D.C. G. B. Chittenden died on 24 February 1939 in Madison, Connecticut.
