The A. J. Patton Co. was established in 1914 by Arthur J. Patton, a land surveyor who had been in business for himself for a number of years. The business appears in the Waterbury city directories as "Engineers & Surveyors" and as "Land Surveyors & Blueprints" at different dates. It continued under the same name for at least a few years following Patton's death in 1934.
