Bernard Romans

BiographyThe mapmaker and engraver Bernard Romans was born in Holland about 1741. He was educated as a civil engineer in England, and came to America about 1757. In 1761, he married Maria Wendel in Albany, New York. He joined the colonial forces at the outbreak of the Revolution. In 1779, he married Elizabeth Whiting, of Wethersfield, Connecticut. He was taken captive by the British when the ship on which he was traveling from New London to Charleston was captured by the Royal Navy. He was released at the end of the war and died on his way home.
