Alexander Anderson

American, 1775 - 1870
BiographyAlexander Anderson was born in New York City in 1775. He abandoned a career as a medical doctor to become America's first wood engraver. His work was strongly influenced by that of Thomas Bewick, who revived the technique of wood engraving in England in the late eighteenth century. Although they also issued individual prints, both men specialized in book illustrations.
