Marcus Smith

The 1850 Federal Census shows the engineer Marcus Smith living in Hartford, Connecticut His place of birth is given as England. Otherwise there is no firm evidence of this individual anywhere in Connecticut or in the United States, though at least one and possibly two different people named Marcus Smith lived in Hartford later in the nineteenth century. Marcus Smith, a surveyor, appears in the 1851 and 1871 British Census; it is possible but by no means certain that this is the same man who was in Hartford in 1850.
