Edmund S. ValtmanAmerican, 1914 - 2005

Edmund S. Valtman was born on 31 May 1914 in Estonia. He was trained as an artist and placed his first cartoon in an Estonian magazine at the age of fourteen. Because of his anti-Russian cartoons, he and his wife left Estonia in 1944, just before the Russians recaptured it from the Germans. They spent several years in a displaced persons camp in Germany before immigrating to America in 1949. They worked as a gardener and cook for a short time, until Valtman was hired by the Hartford Times as an editorial cartoonist. In 1962, he received a Pulitzer Prize for his work. He was living in Bloomfield, Connecticut at the time of his death on 15 January 2005.
