Cuff Smith

1756 - 1822
BiographyCuff Smith was the son of Venture Smith, who was the son of an African prince, who was enslaved by Thomas Stanton of Stonington. Venture bought Cuff's freedom. Cuff means Friday. In 1780 Cuff enlisted in the Continental Army. He was a private in the Revolutionary War from 1781-1784. He returned to East Haddam, where he worked a as a basket maker.
