Abner Reed

American, 1771 - 1866
BiographyAbner Reed was an self-taught engraver who also painted signs, grained chairs, ornamented drums, and gilded and painted carriages. His apprentices included Asaph Willard, Ralph Rawdon, Oliver Pelton, and John Warner Barber. Another apprentice, Samuel Stiles, married Reed's daughter Charlotte Sophia in June 1825. The marriage was performed by the Reverend Thomas Robbins, who, in 1844, became the first librarian of the Connecticut Historical Society.
