According to The Allen Memorial by Orrin Peer Allen, 1907, Luther Allen was born in Enfield June 11, 1780. He married November 17, 1803, Sally P. Abbe. Their first child was born in Ithaca, N.Y. in 1804 and four others, 1806-1821, were born in Enfield. He is described as an engraver and portrait painter, and was also a good musician and the author of the popular "opera reel." His only advertisement found is in 1801 when he stated that he had "considerable experience in the above arts." In addition to his portrait of Stephen Williams, the only other engraving credited to him is A South West View of Newport, 1795.
