Major Moulthrop

Major Moulthrop was a photographer in New Haven, Connecticut. He was in business in some form or another from at least 1846 to 1885. At times his business was listed as Moulthrop & Hart, Moulthrop & Litch, and Moulthrop & Williams.

The Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin Vol. 47, No. 4 from Winter 1982 listing Connecticut Photographers by town notes, "Major Moulthrop's legendary career with a camera spanned forty years and is an illustration of the evolution of photography. Originally a teacher of drawing, he continued for many years to give lessons and he listed his occupation sequentially as artist, artist and daguerrean, photograph artist, and photographer. His advertisements decried the 'want of artistical skill and experience ' on the part of his competitors and mentioned that by 1849 he had 'for the last twenty years been engaged in the study of fine arts, and being the oldest operator now engaged in the Daguerrean business in this city, he flatters himself that he shall be able to do justice to all who may please to favor him with a sitting.'
