BiographyCaptian Laban Lathan was born about 1762 in Smithfield, Rhode Island. He was the son of William Latham (d. 1796) and Elizabeth Latham of Johnston, Rhode Island. Laban Latham is documented as having been appointed Ensign (1794), Lietuenant (1796), and Captain (1798) of the First Company militia of Johnston, Rhode Island. He married Zerviah Remington, who became insane after her husband's death and died at the home of her son, Honorable Joseph Latham, in Eastford, Connecticut. According to family history, Captain Latham was said to have been a privateer, but no documentation has been found linking him specifically to any vesel or activities.
