Mary Balch's School

American, 1785 - 1831
BiographyThe school was founded by Mary Balch (1762-1831), the daughter of Newport tailor Timothy Balch (1725-1776) and Sarah Rogers (1735-1811). Samplers from the Mary Balch school are known for depicting prominent buildings in Providence, ships, an archway form. Balch taught the students needlework herself.
