Richard S. DeLamater first appeared as a photographer in the Hartford city directory in 1862. He continued in business for forty years, the longest that any Hartford photographer operated under a single name. In 1893, DeLamater's son, also named Richard S. DeLamater, joined his father and they began doing business as R.S. DeLamater and Son.
