BiographyDr. Timothy Phelps Beers was born in New Haven on 15 December 1789 and died there on 22 September 1858. On 9 September 1816 he married Caroline Ann Mills (b. 29 September 1792, d. 15 August 1826), daughter of Isaac and Mary Mills of New Haven. They had children who lived to adulthood: Mary Elizabeth, Abigail Phelps, Isaac Mills, Charlotte McCrae, Dr. Timothy Phelps Jr and a twin sister Caroline Mills (b. 21 January 1826). On 8 January 1827 he married Mary Ann Barney (b. 24 May 1799, d. 26 February 1893), daughter of Hanover Barney and Phebe Wolcott and widow of George Ingersoll Whiting of New Haven.

Beers graduated from Yale in 1808, studied medicine in New Haven, attended the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, served as Surgeon for a militia regiment stationed in New London in 1813, then spent the rest of his life practicing medicine in New Haven. He was Professor of Obstetrics at Yale from 1830 to 1856 and lived on Church Street.
