BiographyLucius Stebbins was born 5 June 1810 in Granby, Massachusetts. He settled in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1832, where he learned the trade of map coloring while working for D. F. Robinson. Stebbins invented a machine used to color maps in Smith's and Olney's geographies. He entered the business of subscription book publishing under the firm name American Publishing Company. On 22 February 1859, Lucius Stebbins married Martha Dickinson. He died in 1901.
