BiographyBetty Lewis was the daughter of Elizabeth (or Betty) Washington Lewis and Colonel Fielding Lewis, and the niece of President George Washington. She married Charles Carter of Frederick, Virginia, on 7 May 1781. Listings of Betty Lewis's life dates are inconsistent. Her birth date is given as about 1758 by some sources, but other say 1765. Only one source provides an exact birth date, 23 February 1765. This same problem clouds her death date as well. Some sources say 1829, while others say 1830. The source that listed an exact birth date lists her death date as 9 August 1830. However, no source provides corroborating evidence for their dates.
