Mary Augusta Young

American, 1892 - 1979
BiographyMary Augusta Young was born on 7 January 1892 in Waseca, Minnesota. Her parents were Carl Henry Young (born 8 December 1860 in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin - died 23 December 2938 in Waterville, Lane, Oregon) and Mary Edith Blatchley (born 1863 in Waseca, Minnesota - died 1930). Her parents married on 13 December 1883 in Waseca, Minnesota. There is some confusion about her full name: she was called Augusta, but always said her full name was Mary Augusta (according to her daughter, Hope Starr Allen); however, Mary does not appear consistently on the records. Augusta Young grew up in Portland, Oregon, where, at age 19, on 19 January 1911, she married Edward Burgis Starr (1890-1953). Shortly afterward, they moved to Cornwall, Connecticut, where they lived until Mr. Starr's death in 1953. According to her daughter Hope, Augusta had "a busy life," with nine full-term pregnancies by the time she was 34 (about 1926).

Mrs. Starr moved to West Hartford in 1962 at age 70. Mrs. Starr died in December 1979 at age 86; her daughter Hope believes she died at Farmington Convalescent Home, rather than at Hartford Hospital.

Augusta Young Starr did not have any formal art training. She began doing crewel embroidery when she moved to West Hartford, at age 70 in 1962. She learned from Marcia Davenport of Wethersfield. A fragment of an envelope preserved in a photo album owned by Hope lists the projects she completed between September 1962 and March 1970, as well as a number of projects completed between 1970 and her death in 1979 (this list was photocopied for file 2005.178.1-.4).
