Alta Harriett Farr

American, 1862 - 1937
BiographyAlta Harriett Farr was born at Dickinson Center, New York on 23 September 1862, the daughter of Allen Farr and Mary Elizabeth Chase Farr. She married Edward W. Biglow of New Britain, Connecticut on 10 June 1885. The marriage was held at the home of her aunt and uncle, Louise Jane Chase Rosebrooks and George L. Rosebrooks, in Mansfield, Connecticut. The home was at the site of the present University of Connecticut; Mr. Rosebrooks was the manager of the Storrs Brothers farm, and the brothers donated the farm and land to become the future University of Connecticut at Storrs.

Alta and Edward later lived in Litchfield, Connecticut, where Edward was the farm manager for Miss Mary T. Buell, who gave her home and farm to the State of Connecticut for the George Junior Republic. Then they worked for Miss Buell's brother, Dr. John Buell, at Spring Hill Farms in Litchfield. Alta and Edward worked and managed the Groton Farms at Westbury, Long Island, New York between 1916 and 1918. Sometime after 1919, they managed the Gilbert Farms in Georgetown, Connecticut.

Upon their retirement, Alta and Edward bought a home in North Woodbury, Connecticut, on old Route 6. Alta died there on 24 May 1937; Edward died in 1951. They had no children.
