Simeon Stedman

American, 1782 - 1842
BiographySimeon Stedman was born in 1782. He is presumed to have apprenticed to Aaron Chapin, the Hartford cabinetmaker. Stedman was calling himself a cabinetmaker in certain land transactions, one of which was with Abel Chapin, another member of the cabinetmaking family. Aaron Chapin lived next door to the Boardmans, who were pewterers in Hartford; as Simeon Stedman married Sally Boardman, a sister of Thomas Danforth Boardman and Sherman Boardman, the tie-in to both pewterers and cabinetmakers is well-established. Stedman was granted a patent on a ladle handle socket on 25 July 1818. He apparently moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, after about 1825, and he died there in 1842.
