American, 1784 - 1853
BiographyAshbil Griswold was born in Rocky Hill (Wethersfield), Connecticut, on 4 April 1784. Griswold trained as a pewterer in the shop of Thomas Danforth III, from about 1798-1806. He may have worked briefly for Danforth for the next year or two, perhaps selling pewter for him in the Baltimore area. Griswold moved to Meriden, Connecticut, in 1808 and established his own shop. His sales were primarily in flatware, and gradually increased to include porringers, mugs, and finally Britannia ware. By about 1830, the shop employed twelve men, and Griswold took Ira Couch into the business as a partner. Ashbil Griswold died 30 May 1853.
