BiographyAccording to the Civil War Manuscripts Project at the Connecticut Historical Society Library, Horace Lay (1823?-1862) of Hartford was a shoemaker and private in the Sixteenth Connecticut Infantry, Company I. He enlisted on 1 August 1862 and was mustered-in with his unit on 24 August 1862. He was wounded in the battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862 and died a few weeks later.
