BiographyThomas Danforth I was born in Taunton, Massachusetts in May 1703 and died in 1786. No records have been discovered that indicate who he apprenticed with, but he did operate a metalworking business in Taunton. In 1733, he moved to Norwich, Connecticut, and continued to create products with base metals: iron, brass, copper, and pewter. In the early 1760s, his son, John Danforth (1741-1799), completed his apprenticeship as a pewterer, and father and son established a partnership. This arrangement continued until 1773. It is unknown in what capacity Thomas I continued in the metals business, whether he produced metal products or sold products made by his sons, John Danforth or Thomas Danforth II (1772-1827), of Middletown.
John Carl Thomas, author of Connecticut Pewter and Pewterers, believes that Thomas Danforth I was principally an iron and brass founder in his early life, and also manufactured copper goods and small items made in pewter. John Carl Thomas notes that it is unlikely that he marked any of his products.
