In 1833, Harriet Powell opened a private school in Waterbury, Connecticut, near the site of City Hall. Harriet Powell was succeeded by Mary A. Hotchkiss, whose school was kept in a building in the rear of St. John's Church. Mary A. Hotchkiss married Wales B. Lounsbury of Waterbury on 22 March 1846.
