Richard Brunton

BiographyRichard Brunton was an engraver and painter, born in England in 1749. He served a two-year term (1799-1801) in Newgate Prison in Connecticut for counterfeiting. While in jail, he painted the portraits of the warden and his wife, Reuben Humphreys (1757-1832) and Anna Humphreys (1759?-1827). These portraits are in the CHS Museum collection, 1970.2.1 and 1970.2.2. The CHS also has two versions of "A Prospective View of Old NewGate, Connecticut's State Prison" engraved by Brunton. One is c. 1799 (1859.3.0) and one is a restrike from c.1870 (1950.574.0). The CHS also has four family registers, engraved by Brunton, (1972.16.0, 1973.74.3, 1981.22.0, and 1985.3.0). Richard Brunton died in Groton, Massachusetts in 1832.
